Meaning of Suffiyah

قال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية رحمه الله
واسم الصوفية هو نسبة إلى لباس الصوف هذا هو الصحيح وقد قيل إنه نسبة إلى صفوة الفقهاء وقيل إلى صوفة بن أد بن طانجة قبيلة من العرب كانوا يعرفون بالنسك وقيل إلى أهل الصُّفة وقيل إلى الصفا وقيل إلى الصفوة وقيل إلى الصف المقدم بين يدي الله وهذه الأقوال: ضعيفة فإنه لو كان كذلك لقيل صفي أو صفائي أو صفوي أو صفي ولم يقل صوفي.

The word as-Sufiyyah (Sufism) refers to wearing woollen clothing, this is the (most) correct meaning. It was said that it comes from the word Safwatal-Fuqahā (the Elite Fuqahā) or from Sufah ibn Add ibn Tā'nijah, an Arab tribe that was known for its asceticism, or from Ahlus-Suffah (poor Muslims in Madeenah at the time of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم who used to stay in the masjid), or from Mount Safa, or from the word as-Safwah (elite), or from the phrase as-Saff al-Muqaddam bayna yaday Allāh (the foremost rank before Allāh). All of these views are weak, if any of them were true then the word would be Saffi or Safā'ī or Safawi, not Sufi!
