Minimum Period of Time in which The Qur’aan Should be Completed in

Question: What is the minimum period of time in which the Qur’aan should be completed in?

Response: There is no fixed limit in this (matter) except that it is more preferable that he should not (complete) reciting the Qur’aan in less than three days as reported in the Hadeeth by ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al ‘Aaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) who said:

Whoever reads the Qur’aan in less than three days does not understand (what he recited) [1]

Thus it is better that he pursues humility, correct recitation [2] , and contemplation (of the meanings) in his recitation. Hastiness (in completing the Qur’aan) is not the purpose, rather the intent should be for him to benefit (from his recitation).

It is commendable that he increases the recitation (of the Qur’aan) in Ramadaan just as it was done by the Salaf (pious predecessors) may Allaah be pleased with them all, but with contemplation and understanding. However if he finishes (the recitation of the Qur’aan) within three days (in Ramadaan) then this is excellent. And some of the Salaf (pious predecessors) have stated:

“Verily, virtuous periods of time have been excluded from that.’ (i.e. from the ruling of the aforestated Hadeeth no: 1394 of Imaam Abu Dawood) and actually there is no problem if he completes (the recitation of the whole Qur’aan) every night or everyday just as As Shafi’ee and other than him have mentioned.” [3]

However the Sunnah is evident, in reality there is no distinction between Ramadaan and other Months. Indisputably it is appropriate for him not to rush and be with tranquility in his recitation and to recite the Qur’aan correctly just as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be with him) ordered ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr Al ‘Aaas saying:

Complete its recitation in seven (days) [4]

This was the last (commandment) that he (the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allaah be with him) ordered ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Al ‘Aaas with.

Some of the Salaf held the opinion that the last part of the former Hadeeth [5] referred to months other than Ramadaan, this opinion requires further in depth research, what is fairly more close to the truth, and Allaah knows best is that it has been Islaamically legislated for the believer that he be heedful with the Qur’aan, strives for perfection in his recitation, contemplation of the Qur’aan, and gives importance to its meanings. He must not be hasty, further more its more preferable that he does not complete (the recitation of the Qur’aan) in less than three days. This is what is suitable in accordance to what has been mentioned in the Sunnah even if it be the month of Ramadaan.

[3] That AsShafee would complete the recitation of the whole Qur’aan in a single night refer to Imam Nawawi’s book on this subject ‘AtTibyaan Fee Aadaabi Hamlaatil-Qur’aan’ [TN]

[4] This was the last part of a narration, the complete narration is as follows: ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al ‘Aaas narrated that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): ‘In how many days should I (complete) the recitation of the (whole) Qur’aan, O Messenger of Allaah?’ He replied:

In one month.

He (Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al ‘Aaas) said: I am more energetic to complete it in a period less than this. He kept on repeating these words and lessening the period until he (the messenger of Allaah) said:

Complete its recitation in seven (days)

He (‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al ‘Aaas) said: I am more energetic to complete it in a period less than this.’ The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

He who finishes the recitation of the Qur’aan in less than three days does not understand it.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Make things easy and do not make things difficult. Give glad tidings and do not repel people..”
