Offering The Sunnah Salaah At Home
The Fourteenth question of Fatwa no. 6259
Q14: Is it better to offer the Sunnah Salah (supererogatory prayers) and the Nawafil (extra supererogatory prayers) such as the Shaf' (two units of Prayer, particularly before the final unit of the odd-number prayer), and the Witr (Prayer with an odd-number of units) at home or in the Masjid (Mosque)?
A: It is mentioned in Sahih Muslim, in a long Hadith that the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"You should perform (optional) prayers in your houses, for the best prayer performed by a person that offered in one's house, except the obligatory."
There is also the Hadith, "The best prayer of a person is what which they pray in their house except the obligatory prayers."
